Diving in a lake or in the sea: what are the differences for a beginner?

The basic diving skills are the same, but water temperature, visibility, buoyancy and diving conditions can be very different.

In Switzerland, lake diving generally means cooler water, with visibility that varies depending on the season and depth. A thicker wetsuit affects buoyancy, while freshwater generally requires less weight than seawater. In the sea, divers may need to adapt to waves, currents, boat entries and slightly greater buoyancy in saltwater. Learning to dive in a lake therefore helps develop good habits in a variety of conditions. Once certified, a diver trained in Switzerland can of course dive in the sea: they simply need to adjust their weighting, equipment and diving habits to the local conditions.
